mrs.cotter was our mystery reader, she read two books. We made a tree with snowflakes and wrote poems that described snow.
Learing all about percussion instruments from the Grand Rapids Symphony Percussionist Bill Vits.
Listening to Michigan author Ruth McNally Barshaw.
This week we learned about the Pilgrams and the Mayflower. 3rd graders treated a wind powers boat that could make the pilgrimage across the "ocean". In math we learned how to make line plots to represent and interpret data. So far we are representing data using bar graphs, picto-graphs and line plots. In writing we are revising and publishing our second personal narrative story. Our next unit will be writing realistic fiction stories. We will be focusing on the elements of a story and using a strong lead (or beginning) middle and ending. In reading we warped up our character study unit and are moving into series book clubs. Your student will be part of a student led book club reading their way through a book series. Next week we will also be starting our next science unit on forces in motion where we will be exploring force, motion and gravity.
10-14-16
Our third graders are publishing their first personal narrative stories this week! They are learning how to use chrome books and publishing using google docs. We are working on adding dialogue, descriptive words and telling our stories bit by bit. As readers we are really digging into the characters in the books we are reading, we are looking for clues that help us make strong predictions about what our characters will do next and using evidence from the story to support our thinking. We just started a new unit in math about collecting data and graphing. We are learning how to organize data to answer a question, on Monday we will start to look at different graphs we can use to organize our data. In science we are starting our exploration of sound. We have discovered that sound is made by vibrations and are looking at string instruments. We are learning how to change the pitch of a sound and on Friday we made our own guitars!
10-7-16
This week we wrapped up science explorations with light and we are moving on to sound next week. We also learned about division and how it is related to multiplication, your third grader is working on writing their own multiplication and division story problems and developing strategies to solve them. In writing we are getting ready to publish our first personal narrative story and studying the writing of Karen Hess to make our stories even stronger. This week we started a new unit studying characters and we can think like the characters in our books. This led us to have some discussion on empathy and how we can empathize with our characters and people around us. We watched the True Colors music video below and thought about how is helps us understand empathy.
9-30-16
On Monday we got our tie dye shirts back and they look amazing! This week in Third Grade we learned all about shadows in science and our state symbols in social studies, we started writing our first personal narrative stories in our writers journals. We are working on writing in a way that makes our reader feel like they were actually there with us, by telling the story bit by bit and including talking in our writing. In math we learned how to find the area of a rectangle and are starting to learn our multiplication facts. By the end of third grade we will know all of our facts up to 10.
We made apple sauce today and shared it with our kinder buddies! You third grader is learning how to read like a teacher and be role model for younger learners.
9-23-16
We had an amazing week in 3rd grade! We had so much fun tie dying today, your third graders learned all about blending colors and other tie dye techniques. A huge thanks to Craft Outlet (1450 Buchanan Ave SW) for donating the tie dye and other supplies so that we could make this project possible. Another thanks to the Whitcombs for helping out and teaching our kids tie dye tips and tricks.
We were totally fascinated by the storm this week and were wondering what it would be like if the power went out so we decided to try readers workshop with flash lights this week.
9-16-16
This week we started our science and social studies classes. We are learning about light in science, we did an experiment that showed us that you can not see anything without light. We also looked at our pupils and saw how they change when they are in light or darkness. In social studies we are learning about Michigan geography and learning how to read a map.
9-9-16
We had a hot but fun filled first week of school! Your third graders worked hard as they learned about our classroom and new curriculum. Our main focus this week was having a growth mindset, we learned that mistakes help our brain grow and they are an opportunity for learning. We are working hard on being optimistic and telling ourselves that we can do our best even when something seems challenging. Below are some questions you can ask your student to help them develop a growth mindset at home.
8-21-16 Welcome!
I am looking forward to seeing you all at open house! Don't forget to bring your supplies with you on the 31st.
